DRUMS OF THE WORLD

Wakde Island drum New Guinea

Wakde Island / Humboldt Bay drum West Papua / New Guinea / Trommel Neuguinea

Drums provide rhythmic accompaniment for the dances and songs performed during initiation and are said to represent the voices of the spirit world.
Carved ornamentation around the central part of the drum consists of stylized human figures, whose interlocking arms and legs form two continuous zigzag bands.
